We received a call from the site owners at 11.00 on New Year’s Day.  They reported clean running water breaking up through the tarmac roadway over a widespread area.  We attended within 2 hours and met the owners on site.  There was a fire hydrant nearby, so we connected a signal generator to the hydrant, and this enabled us to confirm the pipe location and route across the site.  The pipe route proved to be several metres away from where the leak was actually showing.  We used acoustic equipment (ground microphones) to locate the leak.  The leak position was marked then the water was turned off to stop the waste and prevent the leak from getting worse.  Our repairs team then attended the following week before site staff returned from the festive break and we repaired what proved to be a circum fracture of a 3” cast iron pipe.
